A testing vintage

Since 14 September 2008, a high-pressure zone has been protecting us and keeping the bad weather away. Conditions have been settled and dry, cool at night, and mild during the day.\r\nWe needed some breathing space and this good weather has provided it, allowing us to wait as the grapes ripen slowly yet appreciably. The harvests will be coming late this year:\r\nMerlot between 29 September and 13 October\r\nCabernet Sauvignon between 9 October and 18 October\r\nCabernet Franc between 13 and 18 October\r\nPetit Verdot after 13 October\r\nComparisons of climate conditions and grape analyses suggest similarities with the 1996 and 2001 vintages, rather than with 2007 or 2002. In particular, this vintage enjoyed almost normal sunshine over the year as a whole (average for the last 10 years).\r\nOf course, there were some spectacular highs and lows, with great optimism at the end of July and pessimism all round in early September, but confidence has now been restored. If the harvest timing turns out as expected, our wine should be nicely structured and well balanced, just the way a Bordeaux wine should be.\r\n3 October 2008\r\n\r\nJean Pierre MARIE
